Opinions on Romy AK

My neighbor indiicated he is interested in selling his AK. From what he told me its a Romanian, Tapco green furnature, BSA red dot, some kinda light and several 30 rd mags - don't know if any ammo is included. He wants $550 - is this a fair deal? Since I am aware of other types of rifles but not really tuned into the AK market, I don't wanna hear opinions about AR's, M1's, Siagas, HK's FAL's vs the AK. I want you opinion of what you think of this particular deal (Since he is Border Patrol, lets assume it is in good shape and functions). I am interesed in it general ranking against other AKs and how I might do if I decide to resell it (sans mags)

If it's an SAR-1 buy it.

Yep, if it's a SAR buy it, if it's a WASR, don't.

Re: Opinions on Romy AK

Counter-offer $400. That seems to be the going rate for a WASR right now. If he doesn't accept that, move on to something else.

+1 for a Romanian SAR-1 dated 2001 or later.

Re: Opinions on Romy AK

Thanks for the link - pretty informative site. Pretty much indicates the SAR-1 is the one to get. All the WASR hi-caps seem to have 'mag-wobble' which could be a reliability issue. I would be buying this mainly as a resale item for the next gunshow and to strip out the extra mags and collapsing butt for my other AK's. He is a good guy and neighbor so I wouldn't try to knock him down on price but I need to know the market value so I can make my $$ back and maybe $50 without too much delay.

So basically if it is a WASR, what I am thinking of doing is buy it for 550, replace the furniture with something more OEM-like (AK wood take-off), strip off the reddot, light & mags and then try to peddle it at the next big show for $600 - is this pig gonna fly in todays market???

If it is a SAR-1 would you keep it and sell the Maadi instead?

SilverCity 11-24-2008 10:45 PM

Re: Opinions on Romy AK

Early SARs (pre-2001) were a little sloppy until new importer insisted on better quality control...so one dated 2001 or later would be the one to get. I would rather have a clean SAR-1 than any Maadi I have ever seen...

The date should be marked on the left side of the receiver, right after the serial number, above the mag well...(ex: S1 42XXX-2001)

Sounds like there's about $100 in accessories there so I'd say it's a good deal in my book +plus it's a paperless transfer (the best type).

I'm very happy with my pair of Romys.........they both shoot well and do everything an AK is supposed to do.

For resale, it's a mixed bag. The Romy's are usually towards the 'low' end and yet this buying frenzy has really dried up the whole AK market. At local shows, I see the lowly WASR's going for $700-$750 each !!!!

Crazy market - crazy times - you'll probably do well investing in any AK at lower prices no matter what but do your research like you're doing now.

Oh and CLASSIC ARMS just sold out of their Bulgarian AK's........ugh.

If mag wobble would be your main reason for not getting a WASR, there's an easy fix. See:

Re: Opinions on Romy AK

Happy Thanksgiving everyone - I have been back in WVa for the holidays so haven't been able to respond.
Thanks for the information, I am not a bik AK fan so don't know a whole lot about them although I do have a milled MAK-90 and the MAADI I mentioned. My MBR is a FAL. Like I said, the only reason to buy this one is to keep some of the mags and accessories and then resell the least desirable of the 3 I have. There is a show coming up in Phoenix Dec 5-7 so that would be my prime oppertunity. Sounds like I should be able to pull it off.

Thanks
CG

Re: Opinions on Romy AK

I wouldnt pay a dime over 350 for a Romanian AK. I wouldnt say its a terrible rifle, it is an AK and it will perform for you, but Romanian's arent at the top of the list, closer to the bottom actually, but still, it is an AK and it wont do you wrong, at this point it is all about price, I say 350, if he wont do it move on.

The AK 47 is about the only product where the words 'Made in China' is GOOD.

The Chinese AKs are EXCELLENT rifles.

Russian, Hungarian, Yugoslavian among others are GOOD

Romanian are OK.

Re: Opinions on Romy AK

Within a month you'll never be buying an AK then...you may find someone who bought it a few years back and hasn't kept up with inflation and demand.

Sound advice if this were Spring of 2008. Times have changed.

Romanians are commanding $600+ in my area........not that I'd pay that but the market will.
